Will This Be the Color Everyone Paints Their Room in 2026?
Pittsburgh-based Glidden picks Warm Mahogany, a warm, timeless red, as its color of the year.
Those who lived it will remember when deep red accent walls (paired with emerald greens and rustic golds) reigned supreme in the 1990s — usually complemented by a bold wallpaper border.
Over the years, the rich color palette gave way to the “millennial gray” of the 2000s before arriving at today’s trend of incorporating warm neutrals into the home.
Although a classic color, red hasn’t played a big role in living spaces — until recently.
Pittsburgh-based Glidden, part of The Pittsburgh Paints Company, has chosen Warm Mahogany — a warm-toned red with subtle brown undertones — as its 2026 Color of the Year.
While decorating with red may seem bold, Warm Mahogany is a surprisingly neutral shade; it manages to pair well with other decor while still packing a punch.
“With qualities that are quiet and loud, traditional and modern, playful and resilient, introverted and extroverted, Warm Mahogany encourages DIYers to embrace juxtaposition and lean into a color that is as functional as it is fashionable,” a press release from Glidden says.
Ashley McCollum, a Glidden paint color expert, describes Warm Mahogany as a timeless choice for the home.
“DIYers are faced with selecting a color that fits within the larger lifestyle of a space, not just one prescribed function or moment in time,” she says. “We’re torn between colors that feel authentic, personal and safe, and those that give a rush of newness, risk and excitement.”
Converging style and history, Warm Mahogany is bold enough to draw attention, yet reserved enough to make a lasting statement, she adds.
“This color truly outlasts the moment and owns the mood.”
Glidden color experts especially recommend Warm Mahogany for interior walls and trim, including in the bedroom, where the warm shade creates a cozy, calming atmosphere that feels intimate without being too dark or heavy.
To keep things fresh, pair the color with pops of cream, blush or greenery. Add in soft linens and warm lighting and you’ve got the recipe for a luxurious night’s sleep.
Interior designer Seashal Belldina, owner of Pittsburgh-based Interiors by Seashal, sees Warm Mahogany as a great choice for color drenching, which envelopes an entire room — including ceilings, walls and trim — in a single color.
“The result is an immersive space that feels cohesive, dramatic and surprisingly comforting,” she says.
To keep the look dynamic, she suggests introducing a variety of textures alongside a touch of pattern. Natural wood, soft creams, greens, blush and terracotta tones also add balance to Warm Mahogany.
“I’d also recommend muted serene art in greens and warm reds, antique brass accents and layers of lighting in the room,” she says.
In the kitchen, Warm Mahogany pairs well with matte black or brass hardware for a sleek, modern look. It makes a statement both as a single wall color or behind open shelving, according to Glidden’s color experts.
The versatile hue can also add warmth to a cozy reading nook or bring richness to a modern traditional dining space.
“With inviting vibes that make every meal feel like a special occasion, it is deep enough to add drama, but still chill enough to keep things relaxed,” a press release from Glidden says.
